Since first launching greenfete.org, I am often asked, "Why green? Why fete? What does it stand for? What are
you trying to do with it?" I pause,
take in a breath and begin to ramble, "well- the green is for… and the
fete means…", but the question comes so much faster than the answer. How
do you give a full history of thoughts, goals and visions in a tidy little
reply? Anyone who knows me understands that my ambitions are more protracted
than that. To begin, my daily travels take me from the serenity of my
beloved, lush rural landscape and catapult me smack-dab into the frenzy of
bustling city; fueled largely by medical money and corporate pursuits. It’s
quite a machine really. My career is in the technical industry. My resume
tells of various jobs and experiences, but what a professional document can’t
illustrate is the accumulation of 30+ years filled with sweat-equity, daydreams and a little whimsy. I will sum up my vocation, both in life and by trade, as a
scout; always looking for someone to help. Topics I ponder are spawned from the desire to learn about and support the people in my own
geographic region. Like the small auto
repair shop that I pass twice a day, or the local grocers that accept produce
from area gardeners. My thoughts often gravitate toward earth-friendly
endeavors, and I often wonder who among us has experience with solar energy
and wind generators. Practical questions, too, such as who has employment
opportunities for area youth during the summer months? Or who offers licensed
day care services in the evening hours for second or third shift parents?
What do the locals do for fun in the winter? What if there was a place to find
hidden hot spots, incredible fajitas, outstanding wines made from locally grown fruits, small mom & pop businesses,
local volunteer avenues or even someone in your neighborhood to hem a pair of
pants that you bought too long for your not-too-long legs? I personally know where to get my pants hemmed. I also just
happen to know where the wine and fajitas are. I have witnessed fruits and
vegetables in local stores and I have met a few volunteers in my journeys. My
aim is to seek out the unknown gold mines of
talent, goods and services and share that data
with all who enter greenfete.
